Frequently Asked Questions (25/26 Season Updates)

You Spoke, We Listened

Last season, we asked for your feedback, and you delivered. The survey responses gave us clear insight into what’s working well and where we can improve. For the 25/26 season, we’re taking action on the themes you shared most often: stronger referee consistency, more balanced teams, clearer communication/scheduling, and support for both players and coaches.

Our goal is simple: to make Chester Basketball a safe, fun, and development-focused experience for every child. Below you’ll find answers to common questions, along with the steps we’re taking this season to address your feedback.

Q: How will you make sure referees are consistent and prioritize player safety?

A: For the 25/26 season, we’re launching a comprehensive referee program. This includes mandatory training, ongoing evaluation, and clear guidelines especially around safety-related fouls. Our goal is to create a consistent and safe playing environment for every child.

Q: When does the season run, and what are the key dates I should know?

A: Registration for the 25/26 season opens Sunday, August 31. The season runs from late October through March, with specific timelines for Travel Teams, Recreational Leagues, and Clinics (K–2nd).

Travel Teams: Evaluations in mid-October, practices begin late October, regular season runs December–February, with playoffs in late February and March.

Recreational Leagues (3rd–8th): Evaluations in late November, practices begin December 1, regular season games on Saturdays, playoffs in late February/early March.

Clinics (K–2nd): Saturday mornings, December–February.

We’ll release the full detailed schedule (including practices, game times, and holiday breaks) prior to season start, please find more detailed information on each program page under "Leagues" in the main navigation in the meantime.

Q: Where can I find the rules for my child’s program?

A: We publish program-specific rules (Travel, Recreational, and Clinic) on our website before the season begins. You can review them here.

Q: What support will coaches get to help players of different skill levels?

A: We’ll be providing skill-based practice plans that coaches can use and adapt. These plans are designed to meet players where they are, ensuring that every child continues to learn and grow, no matter their starting point.

Q: Are you doing anything to help coaches improve and feel more supported?

A: Yes! We’re expanding coach development opportunities through clinics and workshops. These will focus on effective teaching, skill-building drills, and creating a positive, inclusive team environment.

Q: What about team balance? That seemed to be an issue last year.

A: You’re right, for 25/26, we’re enhancing our team formation process to better balance teams, including a greater baseline on players statistics and skill level to help inform the choices. This change, combined with improved referee consistency, should have a big impact on the overall experience.

Q: How are you addressing unsportsmanlike behavior from players, coaches, or parents?

A: We’re rolling out a clear conduct policy with defined consequences for unsportsmanlike behavior. Respect and sportsmanship are non-negotiables, and this policy will help ensure games stay positive and safe.

Q: How will communication with parents improve this season?

A: We’re putting in place a proactive communication strategy with clear timelines and channels. This means parents and players will know what to expect from schedules to program updates without needing to chase down information.

Q: Will we have more chances to give feedback during the season?

A: Absolutely. We’re adding regular feedback mechanisms via email communication directly to the general board or any specific individual, to make sure we’re hearing from both parents and players throughout the season not just at the end.

Q: How will you make sure basketball stays fun and not just competitive?

A: Our emphasis this season is on fun and development. While competition is part of the game, our primary focus is making sure every player regardless of skill level enjoys the experience, builds confidence, and grows as an athlete.

Q: When will the team store be open (tentative)?

A: The Chester Basketball Team Store will be open twice this season:

First Opening (Registration): August 31 – September 21

Second Opening (Holiday Shop) : November 17 – December 7

This is the perfect opportunity to order Chester Basketball gear before the season and again before the holidays. A link will be provided once the store opens.
